KW Fireside Gathering #8 and Summer Tavern Hero QualifierThanks to all that came out for our eighth Fireside Gathering that was also our second official Tavern Hero Qualifier! There was over 20 people in attendance which is great, but of course more are always welcome! A special thanks to my volunteer assistants for their generous help to make our Fireside Gatherings run smoothly. Thanks for using the Challonge online bracket system so we can easily show Blizzard the details of our Summer Tavern Hero Qualifier, and I am very glad we met the minimum of 16 participants for the Tavern Hero Qualifier, thanks for your participation and support!
Prizes for Competitive Bracket
For this event we had three Competitive Brackets. The first was a Tavern Hero Qualifier using Conquest rules, and the other two were for fun with one 8-slot Standard and one 8-slot Wild. Prizes were awarded to the Tavern Hero Qualifer bracket and Standard bracket winners, but we ran out of time to complete the Wild bracket.
The Tavern Hero Qualifier bracket winner, OnlyChobo#1131, was able to defeat a tenacious Hsinats, and can now go on to represent our local Fireside Gathering group at the next Tavern Hero tournament! He also chose the Hearthstone bound paper notebook reward from amongst the official Blizzard Hearthstone merchandise we had purchased. Honourable mentions go to level9001 and Dangerboy.
The Standard competitive bracket winner, Sinesta, was was also able to pick a prize item after defeating Emeraldtemp in a well-fought battle. Honourable mentions go to SeanJob and CRANK.
The Wild competitive bracket, had blots in the lead after defeating Conchobear.
We have been approved for a Summer Tavern Hero Qualifier bracket!
Tavern Hero Qualifier Registration and Instruction Guide
You MUST be physically present at the event to participate. Cash donation (suggest $5-$7) is the entry fee. All players in the Tavern Hero Qualifier must register their full Battle.net account name and list of three heroes on our Challonge bracket. Conquest format is required, where you use a Standard deck from 3 different Heroes, and you must use these same 3 decks throughout the entire competition. Please arrive with ample time so that all players can indicate on Challonge they are ready (Check-In), we can then do the bracket seeding (randomization), and start the competition on time at 6:30pm. Keep in mind that if you are late it is not possible to join once the bracket has commenced. After each match, the results are updated on the Challonge bracket. The winner will be able to represent our local group at the upcoming Summer Tavern Hero tournament (in various cities, likely one will be in Toronto) which will take place the day before the Summer Preliminary begins, and the top 32 players will be crowned Tavern Heroes. These players will then join the top 128 competitors from the point standings to do battle in the Americas Summer Preliminary for one of eight spots in the Americas Summer Championship.
Everyone is invited to participate. We must have a minimum of 16 players in the bracket for our winner to be officially recognized, so please feel free to participate even if you don't think you have a good chance of winning. It is a fun process regardless of where you place! Blizzard official rules have a player age restriction of 13 years or older, provided that player under 18 obtain signed permission from their parent/guardian.
Tavern Hero Qualifier - Bracket Registration
We are using a free online service, challonge.com, to track our Tavern Hero Qualifier bracket so that Blizzard can easily view the information.
The bracket registration page is: http://kwfireside.challonge.com/kwfiresidegathering8 and to secure a spot in the bracket you must login to challonge.com and Check-In during the 2 hours right before the event starts at 6:30pm. You may adjust your team name up until you Check-In.
Important! Your team name must be your full Battle.net account name followed by the three hero types you will be using for the entire bracket. Your full Battle.net account name is shown in Hearthstone when you click the Social button in the lower left corner. It is a name followed by a hash then several numbers such as: KWfireside#1709 Please refer to the example screenshot below.
Tavern Hero Qualifier competition requirements:
* Must take place from June 4 to July 24
* Must be open to the public, and held in a public venue
* Must have a minimum of 16 players
* Must be played using Standard decks in the Conquest format
* Must provide a completed event report and tournament bracket within 1 week of the end of the qualifier
* Organizers are not eligible to participate in their own Tavern Hero Qualifier
My understanding of the Conquest Format is:
* All players use their 3 pre-chosen decks, which must be from 3 different heroes, for the duration of the entire bracket
* Decks cannot be modified in any manner for the duration of the entire bracket
* Within a match, after each game won the winning player must switch to a different pre-chosen hero deck they have not yet won with
* The match win occurs after one player has won 3 games i.e. one game won with each of their three pre-chosen hero decks (this may require playing 3, 4, or 5 games to achieve match win)
We are limiting the age of attendees to 15+, however all persons under the age of 18 are expected to act in a mature manner and MUST have the legal document provided below signed by their parent/guardian which covers all events. Printed copies will also be available at the Fireside Gathering, but are still required to be filled out and signed.
Release and Agreement for Minors
We have prepared a handout sheet for each of the 3 groups of people as guidelines: a new player sheet, a casual play sheet, and a competitive bracket sheet. Printed copies will also be available at the Fireside Gathering.

Prizes for Competitive Bracket
A prize will be awarded to the bracket winners, who will be able to pick from some official Blizzard Hearthstone merchandise we have purchased. In the future we will likely add Hearthstone t-shirts and other items. We are checking with Blizzard about the possibility of card pack keycodes being provided by them for awarding as a prize or simply a random draw for any lucky attendee to win. Prize choices are currently a $10-$15 value: a Blizzard hat, an Arena Key bottle opener, one glass from the WoW Brewfest Pint Glass collection, paper notebook for writing, or necklace with pendant. As the gatherings grow in size, or if people want to pay a competition entry fee, we can offer larger prizes.
Remember to bring your friends! All are welcome at the events whether a brand new beginner or a seasoned player!
